After by Victoria Lucas

04/11/2016 – 31/12/2016

Oriel Wrecsam is delighted to present Victoria Lucas ’ film work, After, alongside newly commissioned sculptural work, as part of its PERICLO programme of exhibitions.

After is a documentary work that depicts the empty Castle Market in Sheffield shortly after it’s doors had closed in 2013 and before its subsequent demolition in 2015. The film was created as part of a six week residency at the site, during which Lucas occupied an empty unit in the lower level of the market. A publication documenting the project and the closure of the building is available from Siop//Shop at Oriel Wrecsam.

The new work that is exhibited alongside this film is made using found materials taken from Castle Market during the same aforementioned six-week residency.

Victoria Lucas is a Sheffield-based artist represented by Mark Devereux Projects in Manchester. She studied at Norwich School of Art and Design and University of Leeds. She is currently a Fine Art Lecturer at UCLAN, Preston and is studying for her PhD at Sheffield Hallam University. Lucas works from her studio at Bloc in Sheffield.

Recent exhibitions include: ‘Lands of Memory’, Museo Della Battaglia, Vittorio Veneto, Italy, 2016; ‘B#SIDE WAR Vol.II’, screenings and exhibitions in sites across Venice and the Cormons, Italy, 2016; ‘SLUICE Art Fair’ (represented by Bloc Projects), OXO Tower Wharf, Southbank, London, UK, 2015; ‘Signs That Say What You Want Them To Say’, Lights of Soho Gallery, London, UK, 2015; ‘Peak Experiences’, Shangri-La, Joshua Tree, California, USA, 2015; ‘The Art of Wandering’, In association with CurateSheffield, 35 Chapel Walk, Sheffield, UK, 2015; ‘Artists’ Moving Image Screening’, In association with Mexico, Hyde Park Cinema, Leeds, UK, 2015; ‘Still City’, Cupola Gallery at The Blue Moon, Sheffield, UK, 2015.

PERICLO is a platform for risk and experimentation in contemporary visual art. During Oriel Wrecsam’s transitional period – moving from its home of over 40 years at Wrexham Library to an exciting new cultural centre development in Wrexham’s People’s Market building – PERICLO forms one exhibition strand with peripatetic projects taking place across the town centre and beyond.

PERICLO is an Oriel Wrecsam exhibition programme supported by Wrexham County Borough Council, Arts Council Wales, Welsh Government and the National Lottery.
